Specific actions glossary

The verbs the game uses, each with a precise meaning. Listed alphabetically rather than in rules order.
Assign#
Assigning a Pal to a structure rests it: a resting Pal cannot be assigned, and the act of assigning puts the Pal into the rest state. The Pal is then "assigned to" the structure and the structure "has" that Pal assigned. Told to assign a Pal without naming one, choose a standing Pal you own that meets the stated conditions. A structure's own ability that says to assign a Pal without naming a structure means assign it to that structure.
Attack failure#
An instruction to "nullify the attack" while an attacking Pal exists: finish resolving the effect that caused it, then jump immediately to the end of battle step.
Butcher#
Butchering a Pal moves it to its master's graveyard, when the player instructed is that Pal's master. Told to butcher without a specific Pal named, the player butchers the stated number of their own Pals that meet the conditions.
Consume#
Reduce one of your resources by the stated amount. If you own fewer than required, the consumption does not happen at all.
Damage (dealing)#
Dealing N damage to a Pal or structure increases its damage taken by N. Dealing N damage to a player increases that player's damage taken by N — which then triggers player damage resolution.
Declaring a name#
Declaring a card name, main name or sub name means naming one that actually exists — on a card in the game or on any existing card.
Deploy#
Moving a Pal, structure or gear from anywhere that is not a base to a base. Where the instruction does not say whose base, it is the base of the master of the effect.
Discard#
Move a card to its owner's graveyard. With no zone stated, discard from the player's hand.
Draw#
"Draw 1" moves the top card of the deck to the hand; "draw N" repeats that N times. "Draw up to N" is a loop the player may end at any point, drawing one card per iteration, and does nothing at all if N is below 0.
Exchange#
Swap two cards between their zones simultaneously. If either card cannot make the move at the moment of the instruction, the exchange does not happen.
Exile#
Place a card into the exile zone.
Look at cards from the top of the deck#
"Look at the top N cards" lets the player check that many. "Look at up to N" is a loop: nothing happens if N is 0 or less; otherwise, one card at a time, the player may stop before reaching N.
Look at the deck and choose#
The player looks through the specified range, chooses the required cards and separates them from the deck. A card specified by conditions other than a count is revealed afterwards so both players can confirm it qualifies — and where such a card is not guaranteed to be present, a player may act as though it is not, even when it is. Where only a count is specified, take everything if the range is short, otherwise take exactly the number required; declining to choose is never an option.
Place#
Move a card to the stated zone.
Same name / different card name#
Two cards have the same name if they share any card name at all — relevant for cards carrying more than one. They have different card names if they share none.
Shuffle#
The deck's owner randomises its order. Shuffling a deck of 0 or 1 cards changes nothing but still counts as having been performed.
Soul cost indication#
A number in a shape (for example ②) is a soul cost or a modification to one. Where a soul cost is used to reference a card's information, it means that card's cost. Where it stands alone as a circled number in an activated ability, it means the number of souls to pay.
Specific state#
A named, game-wide condition both players read from the same game. The current list is Night.
Stand / rest#
Change the named card's orientation to the stand state or the rest state as instructed.
"Activates N times"#
Where an effect makes an automatic ability activate N times, meeting its trigger puts it into the pending state N times instead of once. If several such effects apply to one ability, its master chooses exactly one of them.
